"What
is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It
is the breath of a buffalo in the winter time. It is the
little shadow which runs across the grass and loses
itself in the sunset."

..... Chief Crowfoot of
the Blackfoot Nation, at the end of the 19th century
said, as he was dying. His words indicate, even in the
face of death, his reverence for the natural world which
was such an integral part of the daily lives of his
people. Nature was not something to be conquered - it
was was a provider, a companion, a source of wonder. We
could do well to reflect on the attitudes of a man who
lived in such harmony with his land and yet who, through
the making of Treaty Number 7, chose to share the sacred
land with all mankind. |
