The Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park is located just south of the Trans Canada highway about one hour east of Calgary. It is accessed via highway 842 which is paved and a paved road leads from the highway to the park. Ample parking for buses, RV's and cars will be provided at the site. This parking area will be set amongst a series of man-made hillockes that will reduce the visual impact of the vehicles from the surrounding site.
A winding drive will lead to the Interpretive Centre. Huge stones left by receding glaciers will be placed along each side of the drive in order to create a dramatic approach to the Centre. Various elements of the Centre, such as walls and windows, will reflect on the curving form of the meandering drive and Bow river beyond.
The Centre will be set into the escarpment and native prairie vegetation on the roof will reduce the visual impact of the building on the landscape. To echo the Blackfoot lodging, teepee-shaped skylights will light the interior space. Aboriginal forms and symbols, such as the traditional geometric designs on teepees, will be incorporated into the wall and floor patterns of the building.
